How to Apply: IBRO/ANS Fellowship for the Australian Course in Advanced Neuroscience (ACAN)

How to apply on-line

Access to the on-line application is available on this page:
http://funding.ibro.info/Pub/Pub_Collections_List.asp

The Fellowship aims to allow young neuroscientists from the Asia-Pacific region to attend the Australian Course in Advanced Neuroscience (ACAN) from April 11 to May 1, 2010 on North Stradbroke Island, near Brisbane, Australia.  ACAN is an intensive 3-week laboratory-based course designed for  PhD students and postdocs/junior faculty who would like to learn the theory and practice of cellular and molecular neuroscience, with a special focus on patch clamping and fluorescence microscopy.  ACAN, which was founded in 2005, is now regarded as the top neurophysiology training course in Australia and New Zealand.

Lectures and laboratory instruction will be provided by internationally-respected neuroscientists from Australia and overseas.  Students will work in pairs, each with their own patch clamp/imaging rig comprising the latest equipment.  In addition to the organised syllabus, students will have the opportunity to conduct a 2-day mini-project of their own design.

A total of 12 students will be selected (10 from Australia/New Zealand, 2 from elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region).  This IBRO/ANS Fellowship is intended for the 2 students from the Asia-Pacific region excluding Australia and New Zealand.  If you are from Australia or New Zealand you are not eligible for this Fellowship, but you may be eligible for other scholarships -- please see the course website for details (http://acan.jcs.anu.edu.au).

The all-inclusive course fee is A$3000, which covers all meals, accommodation, laboratory supplies and teaching materials.  The IBRO/ANS Fellowship will provide US$4000 towards the cost of attending the course. The applicants have to demonstrate they are able to pay the balance of the course fee and travel costs, i.e. in addition to the funds provided by the Fellowship.

For further details about ACAN 2010, including the complete program, please visit the course website at: http://www.ans.org.au/acan

Eligibility
PhD students in neuroscience and postdoctoral fellows or junior faculty (preferably less than 5 years after PhD completion) from the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Australia and New Zealand.

A BRIEF NOTE ON ENTERING DATA IN THE FORMS
You can prepare your text in MS Word. However, since MS Word creates (hidden) formatting codes that cannot be displayed in the on-line forms, these hidden codes have to be removed from MS Word file. There are two ways to do it:
1.    Copy your text into Notepad and from Notepad, paste the text into the form. To copy and paste, mark the original text and use control-C to copy. Place the cursor in the form and use control-V to paste the text.
2.    Or use the filter (icon eraser + W) in the Editor to clean the text of MS Word formatting. You may need to remove empty lines.
New data are first "Inserted" in the form. For all subsequent entries, use "Update". In areas where multiple entries are allowed, there will be a button "Add New". Once finished with entries, use "Continue". If there are no entries, use "Cancel".
Applications will be available on-line for editing until the deadline date - Midnight, EST (Eastern Standard Time, Montreal time).
